ISLAMABAD: The government has decreased the prices of the compressed natural gas (CNG) by Rs6 to Rs7 per kilogram in Punjab after signing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import agreement with Qatar, All Pakistan CNG Association representative Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha said here on Monday. “The commodity will be available at Rs47 per kilogram at CNG outlets in Punjab from March 1,” he said.
He said that CNG price was fixed under a deregulation mechanism developed by the government and the CNG sector. He said the new rates would be implemented at all Regassified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) based stations in the province. Presently, the number of RLNG-based gas stations in Punjab is 911 and it would reach 1,500 soon, Paracha added. “This is a major step towards revival of the dying CNG industry, for which the business community is highly thankful to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi,” he said. He said that CNG stations would help the government bring the oil import bill down and make the country pollution free. He said the All Pakistan CNG Association was confident that the prime minister would revive the CNG industry. He said that CNG in Punjab would be 30 percent cheaper as compared to petrol; therefore, people were attracted to it. He said he was hopeful that public transport owners would pass on the benefit of the cut in the CNG prices to the people.
