LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) on Thursday demanded the prime minister to resign, saying that Nawaz Sharif now has no moral grounds to stay in office after the Panama Papers leaks.
This was stated by PAT spokesman Noorullah Sadique while commenting on the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the Panama leaks. The PAT leader said that the general public is in a state of shock that the family of the prime minister is involved in money laundering and has offshore companies and millions of dollars stashed in foreign accounts. He said that prime minister himself has become double-minded, which was evident from his address to the nation. “In such circumstances, running the affairs of the government are being affected badly and it has become imperative that the PM step down till the judicial commission, which he has appointed, completes its investigation,” he added. Once the prime minister resigns, he would be in a better position to defend himself and his family before the judicial commission, he said, adding that fingers are already being pointed at the appointment of retired judges as members of the judicial commission and it would be better that the chief justice of Pakistan be asked to appoint a commission of serving judges. He said it would be best if the CJP himself heads the commission. He also demanded an independent audit of offshore companies under foreign auditors.
